Course Description
Goal: Identify the aims, objectives and the operation of education in Nigeria with the
role played by philosophy and Sociology of Education. In additional, students
will be equipped with the knowledge of teaching as a profession and the
provisions of the National Policy on Education.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Understand the concept, aims and objectives of Education.
2. Understand the structure of Nigeria system of Education
3. Understand the importance and relevance of Education to the student teacher.
4. Appreciate the impact of sociology on education
5. Understand the operation, control and administration of education as provided by
the National Policy on Education (2004)
6. Understand teaching as a profession in Nigeria.

Unit 2: Structure of Nigerian system of education
Traditional education
Islamic education

UNIT 3: Importance and relevance of philosophy of education
The nature and scope of philosophy of education.
Relevance and importance of philosophy of education to:
the teaching-learning process
the student teacher.
The schools of philosophy of education and some
leading philosophers
Naturalism: Rousseau, Herbert Spencer etc.
Idealism: Plato, Thomas Acquinas etc
Realism: Aristotle, Fredrick Herbert, etc.
Pragmatism: Dewey, William James etc.
Existentialism: Camus, Satre etc
