Comparative Nursing Education

Goal: The course is designed to enable student-teachers acquire knowledge on some foreign systems of nursing education and apply such knowledge in interpreting, operating and molding the Nigerian system of Nursing Education. General Objectives: On completion of this course the students should be able to:- 1. Understand the scope, development and purposes of comparative education. 2. Understand the Nigerian Nursing Education System compared with those of selected African, European, American and Asian countries. 3. Understand the nature and factors responsible for the similarities and differences between the Nigerian system of nursing education and selected foreign systems of nursing education. 4. Understand the problems of Nigerian education system and offer suggestions for solving the problems and improving the system with particular reference to nursing education. Course Content: Unit I: Scope and Purposes of Comparative Education  Definition of comparative education.  Nature of comparative education.  Content, scope and aims of comparative education.  Historical development of Nursing Education. Unit II: Methodology of Comparative Education  The area study approach.  The field study approach.  The problem solving approach.  The case study approach Unit III: Major factors influencing the structure of Nursing System of Education.  Religious factor  Linguistic factor  Economic factor  Geographic factor  Racial/Ethical factors  Political factor  Quota System Policy etc. Unit IV: Systems of Nursing Education  Systems of Nursing Education in the following countries: (a) Nigeria (b) United States of America and Canada (c) Britain and other European countries (d) Australia (e) South Africa (f) Kenya (g) West African countries  Issues and problems of Nigerian System of Education with particular reference to Nursing.
