Course Description
Goal: Understand current issues and problems in Mental Health – Psychiatric Nursing and proffer solutions for quality client care. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand new trends in nursing care Apply modern concepts in Mental Health / Psychiatric Nursing in efficient management of clients. Discuss contemporary issues as they affect mental health/psychiatric nursing. Identify and proffer solutions to prevailing mental health problems. Course Content: Unit I: Issues in Nursing  Evidence Based Nursing (EBN)  Assertiveness in Nursing  Therapeutic Communication Techniques – Listening, Silence, Restating, Reflection, Clarification, Focusing, Broad opening, Humor, Informing, etc  Critical thinking  Decision making process  Survey and evaluation of existing nursing procedures  Infection control and injection safety  Home based care  New technologies in nursing care Unit II: Concepts in Mental Health – Psychiatric Nursing  Legal issues in mental health/psychiatric nursing  Forgotten populations: Homeless, incarcerated, etc  Child and adolescent psychiatry  Sexuality and sexual disorders  Coping with stress and anxiety – professional / workplace stress,  Current therapeutic modalities  Community / Home based mental care
