Introduction to Remote Sensing and GIS

This course helps the students to understand key concepts in remote sensing and Geographic information system. It is expected that at the end of the course, the students should be able to: 1. explain the history of remote sensing; 2. explain the fundamental principles of remote sensing; 3. apply remote sensing to problem solving; 4. explain the history of geographic information system; 5. illustrate the linkage between remote sensing and GIS; 6. interpret satellite images; and 7. apply GIS to problem solving.

Fundamentals of remote sensing (Definition, history of remote sensing, components of remote sensing, electromagnetic radiation), RS process. Relationship between Remote sensing and Geographic Information System; and the applications of remote sensing remote sensing systems, Imageries across the spectrum, Image acquisition, Image restoration and enhancement, Image processing and interpretations, Image storage and retrieval formats; applications in agriculture, environmental resources management, monitoring and change detection, Urban planning.
