Introduction to Environmental Sciences

Course Description
This course introduces the students to basic definitions of environmental science and how the
environment operates. At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. illustrate the multidisciplinary nature of environmental science;
2. define environmental science;
3. interpret how the environment works; and
4. demonstrate how to manage the environment sustainably.
Course Outline
Definitions of environmental science; multidisciplinary nature of environmental science;
components of the environment; Environment concepts, Environment as a system; Energy
systems in the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. Current environmental
issues, including climate change, air pollution and other natural hazards; erosion, drought,
earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and the likes. Role of man in the environment.
