Principles of Measurement of Building Works

Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. gain an awareness and understanding of the principles underpinning the measurement and
description of construction works using the Building and Engineering Standard Method of
Measurement (BESMM);
2. develop the knowledge and skill for setting out descriptions and dimensions in taking off
dimensions from drawings;
3. develop the knowledge and skill for measuring substructure up to and including ground floor
bed for ordinary strip foundation; and
4. develop an understanding and skill for bill of quantities production from the measured
substructure using manual method and MS Excel.
Course Outline
Principles of measurement and description, using the Building and Engineering Standard Method
of Measurement (BESMM), Setting out of description and dimensions in taking off dimensions
from drawings. Forms and order of dimension; the use of brackets, &, Add, Ddt, Ditto and Dotting
on. Waste calculation and alteration in dimensions. Measurement of substructure up to and
including ground floor bed for ordinary strip foundation. Production of substructure bill of
quantities using manual method and the use of MS Excel. Site visits, use of construction pictures
and video diaries to aid students’ understanding of the sequence of construction work being
measured.
