Principles of Management and Administration for Physiotherapy

At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. describe the characteristics of a modern organisation; 2. describe practical ways of developing effective style of personnel management; 3. explain why a physiotherapy manager needs to have some understanding of financial management; 4. differentiate between policies and procedures; and 5. describe the steps involved in planning facilities for physiotherapy practice.

Physiotherapy department, organisation and management, principles of management, human relations, management techniques, personnel management, communications, communication concerns, and strategies for change in the workplace, financial management, legal responsibilities. Nigerian Health Care policy, environment and delivery system, Physiotherapy practice in Nigeria. Principles of management – Organisations, organograms, organisational structure for Physiotherapy practice; Personnel management theory and implications for action, place of unionism in administration, Negotiation for conflict resolution. Operations management; Facilities planning. Ethical principles applied to moral issues in health care regulatory/business ethics. Healthcare marketing. Establishment and operation of a private physiotherapy practice.
