Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. discuss the different methods available to study genetics;
2. describe genes structure, chromosomes and proteins;
3. describe genes structure, chromosomes and proteins;
4. describe the different methods of genetic testing;
5. demonstrate Knowledge and practical skills of molecular genetic analysis of genetic
diseases;
6. construction of pedigrees and analysis of pattern of inheritance in the families;
7. performing of polymerase chain reaction, cloning and transformation;
8. explain the chromosome structure of human and structural mutation of chromosome,
categorize human chromosomes and relate chromosome mutations and genetic diseases;
9. explain the organization of the DNA in human genome; and
10. illustrate autosomal and gonosomal genetic diseases.
Course Outline
Fundamental human genetic principles and variation in gene expression in man, classical and
molecular genetics including Mendelian inheritance, linkage, nucleic acids, gene expression,
recombinant DNA, genomics, immunogenetics, and regulation: patterns of inheritances in
families (autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked dominant, X-linked recessive, Y-
linked and sex influenced), cytogenetics, types and classification of human chromosomes,
methods of preparation of human chromosomes and karyotyping, types of numerical and
structural chromosome aberrations and their causes, gene hybridization, human genomic
studies.
