Social Change

At the end of this course students will be able to: 1. explain the concept of social change with examples; 2. describe forms of diversity and divisions within society; 3. mention and Explain Theories of social change; 4. discuss the applicability of the Theories of social change in modern societies and in specific research contexts; and 5. explain the benefits and problems associated with Social Change.

The concept of social change. Benefits and challenges of social change. Analysis of the nature and mechanisms of the transformation that African societies have undergone (and are undergoing) since the colonial encounter with the Western world. The colonial situation and African responses; the emergence of new economic, social, political institutions, status structures and ideological orientations, as well as the crisis of development in the post-colonial era will be explored.
