Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. explain basic concepts related to management;
2. explain the roles, skills and functions of management;
3. analyze organizational problems and how managerial decisions are arrived at; and
4. demonstrate the complexities associated with management of human resources in the
organizations and how to apply the knowledge in handling these complexities.
Course Outline
Basic concepts in management. Management principles. Functions of the manager. Planning:
Nature and purpose of planning. The organizing function: Department, line and staff Authority.
Staffing and directing: Selection of employees and managers. Appraisal of managers.
Management development. Nature of directing. Motivation. Leadership. Controlling: The control
process, control technique, recent developments in the control function. The Nigerian
environment: Management problems in Nigeria, challenges of indigenization, transferability of
management system.
