Introduction to Orthodontic Techniques

Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. define and classify orthodontic appliances;
2. recognise the type of orthodontic appliances; and
3. apply the principles of classification to how to design the orthodontic appliances.
Course Outline
History and development of Orthodontics – define Orthodontics, orthodontic treatment in
contemporary dental practice, goals of orthodontic treatment, terminology in orthodontics,
classification of orthodontic cases viz class I, class II and class III. orthodontic model making and
trimming. Muscles of mastication and expression (facial). Review of the safety and the science of
dental procedures, while introducing the skills required for manipulating wires and acrylic to
fabricate orthodontic appliances. The anatomical study tooth repositioning and the appliances
associated with orthodontics.
