Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to
1. identify different materials that can be used for the formulation of ceramic glazes and their
chemical properties;
2. analyse the theoretical aspects in glaze formulation and applications; and
3. demonstrate the practical aspects in glaze formulation and applications.
Course Outline
The course helps students have theoretical and practical exposition into the design and
formulation of glaze and applications, identifying different materials that can be used for the
formulation of ceramic glazes and their chemical properties. Basic historical trend of glaze
development. Different types of glazes and their peculiar characteristics. Opaque, raku, salt, and
ash glazes. Theory of glaze formulation. Introduction of limit and unity formula; RO group, R2O3
group and RO2 group. Oxides and their functions in glazes. Glaze/glass colour study. Glaze
application through dipping, spraying using trailing. Gloss firing procedure, glaze effects,
marbling, pattern transfer, under glaze, in-glaze and on-glaze. Glaze properties and quality
evaluation.
