Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. explain the production process and properties of steel;
2. identify different design codes for steel structures;
3. design steel elements; and
4. apply appropriate computer software programmes in design of steel structures.
Course Outline
This course introduces the students to steel structures with emphasis on the production process
and properties of steel, design of members and the applicable codes and performance
specifications. Elements of steel frame for industrial buildings. Grades of steel used in
construction; steel sections used for structural purposes. Metallurgical considerations in the
selection of steel for building purposes. Elastic design to Eurocode 3 and its limitations. Protection
of steel structures against fire and corrosion. Philosophy of Steel Design and Design Principles.
Design of simply supported steel beams. Design of multi-story steel column; cased steel columns
(encased in concrete), types of column bases and column caps. Design and details of steel roof
trusses. Built-up beams; design and details. Elementary plastic theory. Application of Eurocode 3
to steel design. Design Project using computer software programmes.
