Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate understanding of research methodology;
2. explain the meaning of research, objectives of research, types of research & research
approaches;
3. formulate research problem: Statement of research problem Statement of purpose and
objectives of research problem;
4. define research problem;
5. formulate research design;
6. demonstrate meaning of research design;
7. explain the need for research design;
8. carry out sampling design, criteria for selecting sampling procedure;
9. conduct measurement & scaling techniques;
10. demonstrate measurement in research- measures of scales, sources of error in measurement;
11. demonstrate ability of carrying out methods of data collection, collection of primary data,
sampling fundamentals, need for sampling; and
12. demonstrate ability of conducting analysis of data: Types of analysis, testing of hypothesis,
and basic concept of research.
Course Outline
Introduction to Biostatistics. Definition – Statistics and Biostatistics. Applications of Biostatistics.
Data collection from experiments & surveys. Variable – Qualitative & Quantitative, Discrete and
Continuous. Presentation of Data: - a). Tabular Presentation of Data – Statistical Table, Format
of a Table. b) Frequency Distribution – construction of Frequency Distribution, cumulative and
relative frequency distribution, Exclusive and inclusive method of classification of data. c)
Diagrammatic Presentation of Data: - Bar diagrams, Pie Diagram, Line Diagram, Pictogram,
Cartogram or Statistical map.d) Graphical representation of a Frequency distribution –
Histogram, Frequency. Polygon. Frequency curve, ogives or cumulative frequency curves.
Research methodology: Introduction to Research methodology: Meaning of research, objectives
of research, types of research & research approaches. Research problem: Statement of research
problem Statement of purpose and objectives of research problem, Necessity of defining the
problem 3. Research design: Meaning of research design, Need for research design. Sampling
Design: Criteria for selecting sampling procedure. Measurement & scaling techniques:
Measurement in research- Measurement scales, sources of error in measurement. Methods of
data collection: collection of primary data. Sampling fundamentals, need for sampling 8. Analysis
of data: Types of analysis. Testing of hypothesis, basic concept.
