Course Description
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Explain the properties, applications, processing and manufacturing techniques of fibre glass;
and
2. Explain the properties, applications, processing and manufacturing techniques of glass
composites and glass-fibre reinforced composites.
Course Outline
Definition of fibre glass. History of discovery of fibre glass. Types, properties and applications of
fibre glassing aerospace, telecommunications, building and construction. Processing and
manufacturing techniques of fibre glass. Definition of composites. Classification of composites.
Glass and glass-ceramic matrix composites. Glass-reinforced plastics (GRP) and glass-fibre
reinforced plastic (GFRP). Applications of GRP and GFRP in automotive industry, aerospace
industry, packaging, military protective equipment, building and construction.
