At the end of the course, the student should be able to: 1. discuss the anatomical and physiological changes that are associated with pregnancy and child birth; 2. apply knowledge of preconception in the care of women and their families; 3. describe normal pregnancy, labour and puerperium; 4. describe abnormal pregnancy, labour and puerperium; 5. discuss family planning methods including factors that affect acceptance and choice of methods; 6. apply the knowledge and skills acquired to conduct physical health assessment, plan and implement care for the family with other health care providers; and 7. discuss the role of the nurse and midwife in the clinical area and the community including during immunisations.
