BUD 381
Soil Mechanics and Foundations II
2
Course Description
At the end of the courses the students should be able to:
1. carry out various tests on soil samples to determine level of compaction and consolidation;
and
2. determine shear strength and bearing capacity of soils.
Course Outline
Study of the characteristics and behaviour of soil as it relates to the design and construction of
buildings. Topics include compaction, seepage, subsurface stress, shear strength and settlement.
Laboratory sessions are devoted to testing soil samples for relevant properties.
